For Carolyn, the dream of working in the United States began in childhood. Growing up, she heard stories from relatives about life in the U.S. — the “land of milk and honey.” As time passed, that dream stayed with her, eventually aligning with her professional ambitions as a nurse.
“Due to the meager salary and unhealthy work conditions in my country, my ambition to go to the U.S. was fueled,” she shared. Language presented another hurdle. “I know how to speak English, and I got a high IELTS band, but listening to everyone speak at once was exhausting,” Carolyn said. “Eventually, I realized even Americans sometimes struggle to understand each other, and that helped me relax.”
Daily victories, both big and small, helped build her confidence. “Moments when my colleagues patted me on the back or told me I did well were significant,” she said. “When my preceptor said she was no longer needed in the room because I already knew what I was doing, I felt proud. Earning their trust and being left to work independently made me feel like I truly belonged.”

Reflecting on her transition, Carolyn appreciates the professional structure and growth opportunities in the U.S. “The OR environment in the Philippines shares some similarities with SSM, which helped my integration. I particularly value the clear division of responsibilities that ensures patient safety while allowing me to grow professionally,” she said.
